I've never read the book, but it sounds very interesting. Tell me about this Charlotte. How old, what does she look like, what are some of her more dominant character traits?

Charlotte is thirteen, she could be either American or English as she was born in America but was of English descent and she went to school in England. She is described as having "fair hair" I believe, and it's very long, but that's really all we know, though she's thought of as pretty. The book takes place in the 1800s(? I might be wrong on this). She's very strong willed and tries to please everyone. I always got the feeling she never really had the chance to get to know who she was, with everyone expecting her to be a young lady and proper and all. So I always thought she was kinda insecure. She's smart though, smart enough to know that to survive on a ship with a murderous crew she has to try to be friends with everyone. She succeeds too, up to a point. But most of the time she's either really confused about what she ought to do, or really freaked out by what she's witnessed on this boat ride. Over the course of the book, however, she becomes more secure and versitile etc. It's really about her transforation into the socalled "modern girl" from the old fashioned dainty lady.
